I have several recommendations for you in this regard. Moving from most expensive to least expensive are my personal favorites.
You can’t go wrong with the TotalGym, a machine that now appears in gyms and rehab clinics across the country. It exercises every major muscle group in your body, and is endorsed–and used–by perhaps the fittest sixty-nine-year-old in the country, Chuck Norris. You can buy one new from their website (see below). I got mine in 1997, and can’t praise its virtues highly enough. I picked up a reconditioned model, which in most cases simply means it was returned, checked out for imperfections, if any, and resold. Call them on their toll-free line and ask about a reconditioned model. You can also look for bargains on Ebay or check your local Thrifty Nickel paper.
Dropping down considerably in price, you could install a chin-up bar in a doorway, and use that to do chin-ups and pull ups. It can also be used for leg raises to strengthen your mid-section.
A third option would be a jumping rope to use for various rope skipping exercises. This exercise is used by world-class boxers and other fitness enthusiasts of all persuasions. Check out the rope-skipping video by fitness expert Lyen Wong by clicking on the third link below.
Finally,a yoga mat can be bought with the least amount of money, and offers a great platform for yoga exercises. Flexibility is an oft-neglected part of physical fitness, but is so important to overall physical conditioning. The final link below will take you to a site which offers great tips on beginning a yoga program.
I hope you can use one or all of these pieces of equipment. They all provide excellent overall toning.
All my best to you in your efforts to get more fit at home.
