What type of equipment do I need for the p90x workout?
April 27th, 2010 | by admin |I am interested in buying the P90x workout system but Its not clear if I would need additional equipment.
I’ve seen pull up bars, bands, free weights and mini home gyms in some youtube videos and I don’t have those things.
Will I need them?
Thanks In Advance.
I’m about half done the program.
You can use resistance bands for almost everything they use weights for – but I like the feel of the weights myself.
What I have for weights will be higher than yours (since I’m a guy). But for you I would get weights from 5-20 lbs. in 2-3 lb increments. I also bought a pair of weight lifting gloves, and I wear them for each resistance training day (3 times a week).
Push up bars are good because they are wrist savers and also let you go deeper.
You need a pull up bar. This is a tough one for many people but trust me – you need it to really get the results in your shoulders and back. If you go with resistance bands if you have something you can wrap them around (that is very solid) you can use that too. I used a stud finder and mounted my clips near the top of the wall (as I am tall). I put the bar itself away when not in use. It works fine for me this way.
You need a yoga mat. You can also get yoga blocks but I use my push up bars for them and it works fine.
Get some comfortable and flexible work out clothes. At least 2 sets so you can keep them clean and still have a pair available.
Get a towel and a water bottle.
Your diet is key here – so for your snacks I got Kashi bars, Sun-ripe fruit bars (100% no other garbage in them) and the P90X protein bars. Trust me you NEED to feed your body properly here. Eat as much from Tier 1 & 2 from Michi’s ladder as you can. I didn’t at first and it was a big mistake I made.

I use the recovery drink from a local health store and in the mornings I make a smoothie with fresh fruit, fat free yogurt and 2 scoops of whey powder for extra protien. I’m interested in muscle gain so you may not need as much protein as I am taking.
I recommend starting day "zero" with the x-stretch. I would have knowing what I know now, I’m not sure why they don’t do that.
I have to tell you, I love this program now and look forward to even the hardest workouts every night. I feel great and my body is already looking and feeling a lot better and I have a lot more energy.
If you have any questions just E-mail me. I’d be happy to share what I know about the program. I’m not perfect by any means – but this program is designed for people who don’t have a beach body and want one.
This program requires REAL comittment. You have to make the diet and routine part of your schedule EVERY day. The X stands for extreme, and you have to really do your best at it for 90 days every day.

The equipment that you should have are:
- a chin-up bar (it involves a lot pull-ups and chin-ups)
I orginally used an exposed I-beam in the basement, later I made a chin-up bar and hung it from the basement ceiling with some wood and a bar. You can also buy the kind you hook on the door ways. You can buy a fancy chin-up bar but on the p90x video it looks like they are all hanging off a black pipe.
- you need either dumbbells or resistance bands. I prefer dumbbells but you need a range of them or ones that you can change the weight on as you use them in various exercises.
( I have dumbbells and a couple of different plates)
- proper shoes
(i’ve seen it listed that you need a yoga matt and yoga blocks, I do fine without them.)
Hope that helps.
