What equipment to purchase for at-home workout for strong upper body?
April 13th, 2010 | by admin |Question from my 18-year-old son. He has two sets of dumbbells, each different weights, as well as the Perfect Pushup. What other equipment should he get for a strong upper body? Also, he would like some ideas for a good workout routine. Thanks in advance for your answers!
Well, the answer that seems obvious is to get a weight bench — but doing that on the cheap just doesn’t cut it. My Modells bench has sat in the basement, pretty much unused, while I do go to the gym and use their bench. That’s because the small benches and the cheaper quality weight bars that come with them just don’t do the job as well, are rickety, and more dangerous, too.
That said, he’s at a key age of development and should be bench pressing somewhere if at all possible. That’s how one builds bulk. But only use gym-quality equipment. He can join a gym or look on Craigslist for used items.
Pushups and other natural resistance exercises are great for tone — but not for building bulk. Your son will have to start bench pressing more than his weight to start adding bulk.

Barbell is a solid tool, adding a bench with a stand so he can do a bench press is also a good decision.

The upper body is best served by working the lower body and back.
As with a house, a solid foundation is more important than the furnishings.

I think Eddie would be the best person to answer this, although my brother who is now quite barrel chested was once quite lean on the chest size and he did bench pressing as his main source of equipment
