All you need are the weights and the gym.

I recommend dumbells and a curl bar. Get about 150 to 200 lbs of the cheapest weight you can find. and then work out every other day while you watch tv or something. Go to youtube and watch some videos on using free weights so you are sure to do it correctly. Its also important to take in a lot of protein and such so your muscles have fuel to heal and grow.

Gyms are a pain in the ass. I went for years before I set up my home gym, and I get a better workout when I'm at home then I ever did when I was waiting in lines for circuit machines.

BTW free weights are better then any of those machines becuase you also work stabalising musscles when you use propper technique. Just put the time in and you will beef up. Trust me.
References :
Gym based fitness is expensive and leads to injury. Gaining muscle mass can absolutely be done outside the gym. Isometric exercises are very popular with the US Navy SEALs and other special forces outfits. These are very tough fellows who rarely if ever use traditional gym equipment. It's called Isometric and cost no money. Good Luck.
