Why do people spend silly money on fitness machines,When walking and running are as good if not better for you

February 9th, 2010 | by admin |

Because sometimes when it’s -30′Celcius, with a windchill of -45′Celcius, it’s not safe to be outside walking or running because your skin will freeze in less than a minute… also you can’t breathe very well with the scarf and hood.. and you’re bulky with all the winter gear that you have to wear…. I would love to have a treadmill in my house! I wouldn’t have to travel to the gym.. in the cold (I have to walk to the train (20minute walk) and then walk to the gym from the stop… it’s COLD and I wear a parka and snowpants.. and fur hat, mitts and a scarf!!!)). I guess it’s mostly convenience!!

Cheers!

some people have more money then what they need? they like the collection of items they use for a few months in their basements? they want to keep up with the Jones? agree a good pair of shoes and a buddy to walk with or run with is worth more then a fitness machine

They don’t want to jiggle around out where people can see them. Seriously. A lot of people are too embarrassed to go to gyms because of that – it’s why certain gym chains discourage bodybuilders or athletes from being members there, so that the average unfit joe doesn’t feel intimidated and feel even worse about themselves.

People get caught up in fads easily. It’s the old Jones thing. Gotta keep up with the Joneses. Mary Jones had a tummy tuck so I’m gonna get one too, said flat belly Mrs. Smith and so on. Ohhhhhh the Joneses got a 42 inch LCD TV so we’re gonna get a 46 inch…………..

i agree! haha, just walking to school/work will surely help them with weight loss… or they could just walk/jog/run around the area in which they live. or just go to the local gym. why bother buying fitness machines.

Not to sound rude, but im not complaining that some people do this, because when i go to the gym from time to time, i do see some seriously OBESE people on machines, and its not a pretty sight =/ and smelly sweaty people. pah i dont like it..

I live in florida. 9 months of the year it’s over 90 degrees and rains a lot so it’s 95%+ humidity. Also there are no hills anywhere near here and I don’t have to worry about cars or getting mugged if I run later in the day. At home I can run in air conditioning, 12 months a year, safely and can get a better and more intense workout by using the incline feature of my treadmill. In addition the treadmill has shock absorption built in so it’s easier on my joints. I’m sure people in cold weather have very good reasons for not running ni 4" of snow and freezing weather.

    Just a few reasons:

For many, it is to avoid inclement weather and/or cold. It is unsafe to go walking or running sometimes, especially for people in poor health. Having a treadmill in their house allows them to still be active.

If someone has bad knees that don’t allow them to run, an elliptical machine is a better solution than doing nothing.

People with kids, especially very young ones, aren’t always able to leave the house at all to exercise, so machines are the only way they can do it.

i use fitness machines at the local gym.
i can’t run and i don’t like walking outside in the dark of winter.
i use machines that i enjoy using like a cross trainer and rowing machine.
i can also walk in the warm on a treadmill which is great in the winter.
weights are great for me as I’m 50 plus and it keeps me from losing muscle

They complement outside exercise and are very useful in inclement weather.
